Tourist Traps

Mom returned to Oakland yesterday. The trip was seamless and she was back on mainland ground before four in the afternoon.

The new ATA flight is great. It's the first Hilo to mainland flight in twenty years. It started in April. The flight arrival and departure times are a bit weird - daily Hilo arrival is 10 pm - but the 5 hours direct Oakland to Hilo is pretty sweet.

During Mom's trip I ventured to places that Mark and I had not been in our past visits or in our three months as residents. There are just some spots that sound like tourist traps. We feel more comfortable five-miles out in a desert on top of an active volcano than in some lush locale surrounded by camera-clicking visitors.

Much to my surprise many of these places turned out to be absolutely enchanting.
Two of the most awe-inspiring were Akaka Falls and the Tropical Botanical Gardens. While there were many camera-clicking visitors to behold, they could not detract from the awesome sights.
I've created a Kodak Gallery album since the pictures were too numerous to post --> View Slideshow
